Lucknow: The BJP achieved a stunning victory on Saturday in Uttar Pradesh and returned to power in the state after a 14-year gap during which regional parties such as the SP and BSP had held sway.
The BJP, which had just 47 seats in the outgoing Assembly, garnered 40 percent vote share in the most riveting contest seen as a game-changer and a virtual referendum on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's popularity and demonetisation.
The victory triggered widespread celebrations all across the country's most populous state as well as at the BJP headquarters in Delhi.

Either the EVMs did not accept votes other than BJP, or the votes of other parties have gone to BJP in the EVMs, says BSP chief Mayawati.
Most votes in Muslim majority constituencies have gone to BJP, makes it evident that voting machines were manipulated, she adds.
I have written to Election Commission in this regard, people no more have faith in EVM machines, Mayawati further says.

The BJP has been out of power in UP for 14 years.
In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP and its ally, Apna Dal, swept the polls bagging 73 out of 80 Lok Sabha seats in the state, riding the Modi wave.
In the last two UP Assembly elections, the voters of the state had given clear mandates. In 2012, the SP won 224 seats followed by the BSP (80) and the BJP (47).
The Congress and the RLD, which had contested the Assembly elections together, bagged 28 and 9 seats respectively.
In 2007, the BSP had emerged as the largest party with 206 seats followed by the SP which won 97 seats. The BJP had won 51 seats, while the RLD bagged 10 seats.
In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the RLD could not win a single seat. Ajit Singh lost to BJP's Satypal Singh in his bastion of Baghpat, while his son Jayant Chaudhary also lost in Mathura to BJP's Hema Malini.
If Akhilesh Yadav loses UP Assembly Elections it's going to be a serious debacle for him.
Akhilesh had met with stiff Opposition from different quarters of the party but he stuck to his stand. He forged a pre-poll alliance with the Congress whose success or failure may establish or destablise him depending upon the poll outcome.
