Munich's Sueddeutsche Zeitung paper says city's transit system has shut down following shooting at a mall.

It was not immediately clear who carried out the attack, which took place a week after an axe-weilding teenager went on a rampage on a German train. Islamic State claimed responsibility for that attack.

Staff in the mall were still in hiding, an employee told Reuters by telephone.

'We believe we are dealing with a shooting rampage', Munich police was quoted by Reuters.

Several people were reported to be killed and many wounded in a shooting at a shopping centre in Munich today.

The mall is located near the southern German city's Olympic stadium. 

Munich police said on Twitter: "There is a major police operation under way in the shopping centre."

According to witnesses who wrote on social websites, shots were fired at the centre and people were seen fallen on the ground.
