Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanks people of Maharashtra for reposing their faith in BJP and in politics of development and good governance.
Mumbai: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday showcased an impressive performance by winning 82 Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and majorly gaining in elections held for other municipal bodies.
The Shiv Sena finished on top of a hung BMC but the BJP said it could take control of India's richest civic body with the backing of independents. Sena finished with just 84 of the 227 seats.
BJP emerged as the big winner by conquering eight municipal corporations Pimpri-Chinchwad, Akola, Amravati, Solapur, Pune, Nashik, Nagpur and Ulhasnagar.
As it put up a sterling performance in civic polls across Maharashtra including the cash-rich BMC, Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked the people of Maharashtra for reposing their faith in the "politics of development" and "good governance".
Elated over BJP's performance in Maharashtra civic polls, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said BJP's victory resulted from a vote for transparency and demonetisation.
Apart from Mumbai, the municipal corporations which went to the polls were Thane, Ulhasnagar, Nashik, Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Solapur, Akola, Amravati, and Nagpur.
Buoyed by BJP's performance in Maharashtra Civic Polls, Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked the people of the state for reposing their faith in BJP and in the politics of development and good governance.
"Through hardwork, determination & work on the ground, BJP is now a strong force both in urban & rural Maharashtra. Congrats to Karyakartas," the PM tweets.
PM congratulates CM Devendra Fadnavis, Maharashtra unit of BJP, state BJP president Raosaheb Danve.
"BJP is unwavering in the resolve to serve Maharashtra with unparalleled diligence, transparency & taking the state to even greater heights."
"It has been a great start to 2017! First the unprecedented support in Odisha & now the overwhelming blessings from people of Maharashtra."
Uddhav Thackeray addresses a press conference says, Shiv Sena increased its vote share in Maharashtra Civic Polls.
When asked if his party would align with the BJP for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, the Sena chief said, neither Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has called him nor he has spoken with the Maharashtra CM on the tie-up issue.
He exudes confidence that Shiv Sena will retain the coveted Mayor's post.
"What is the hurry? Wait for some time. We have not yet decided if an alliance is to be made or not. We will do so soon," Thackeray says, adding that "But I can assure that not only the Mayor, even the future Chief Minister will be from the Sena."
National Conference leader Omar Abdullah suggests Congress to take a "long and hard" look at its failure in Maharashtra civic body polls.
Here's what Omar tweeted
"The Congress was never going to win the BMC elections so this is less a setback for them than for the Shiv Sena & a shot in the arm for BJP."
"That said Congress will have to look long and hard at the other cities & towns in Maharashtra were it failed to make inroads."
"If 11/03/2017 goes this way I will truly despair for what it will mean for the battle of 2019 which is the one that really matters."

Mumbai Congress president Sanjay Nirupam, who offered resignation from his post due to his party's poor performance in BMC polls, says: "I accept the decision of people of Mumbai. I will keep working for the party."
He adds that some big leaders within the party deliberately made statements on party's work and him. "This result is the outcome of their anti-party campaigns."

BJP leader Vinod Tawde says his party has emerged as the overall leader in elections to 10 municipal corporations and 25 zilla parishads. "The BJP is the number one party in Maharashtra," Tawde, who is also the state's Education Minister, tells reporters outside the party office amid bursting of firecrackers by BJP workers, who were celebrating the party almost doubling its 2012 poll tally in BMC. "This result is a befitting reply to Sena spokesperson Sanjay Raut, who had said the BJP did not have the 'aukat' (ability) to win even 40 seats in the BMC," Tawde says.
As counting trends showed the Shiv Sena surging far ahead in Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, the BJP says it will "introspect" reasons for the party's performance which was "not as per expectations". "We will introspect and find out reasons for our performance in Mumbai, which was not as per expectations," Maharashtra BJP chief spokesperson Madhav Bhandari says. "We have worked hard to reach the number one position in Maharashtra and have taken the party beyond Mumbai and Thane," he adds.

With the trends indicating early lead for Shiv Sena in the BMC polls, MP Anil Desai exudes confidence that there will be no need for them to forge an alliance with BJP in the Mumbai civic body. "The response of the people has been very good. There are several places where the Sena is leading. This is all due to the faith of people in the leadership of (late Sena supremo) Balasaheb (Thackeray) and Uddhav ji," Desai tells reporters at the Sena Bhavan.
Former Maharashtra chief minister and Shiv Sena leader Manohar Joshi says he was positive about the victory of his party. Both the brothers (Raj and Uddhav Thackeray) can't come together, Joshi adds.
The stakes are high for Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray, who led their respective parties from the front and were involved in a no-holds-barred campaign, relegating the Opposition Congress, the NCP and other players like the MNS and the AIMIM to the background.
